2nd La Union Scrabble Open Governor’s Cup 2006 Report

(Report from Gerwin Carbonell, the President of Metro La Union Scrabble Club - MLUSC dated March 1, 2006)

In celebration with the 156th foundation anniversary of La Union, the Metro La Union Scrabble Club (MLUSC), in close cooperation with the Provincial Government of La Union, organized the 2nd La Union Scrabble Open: Governor’s Cup on February 25-26, 2006 at the Lobby of the Provincial Capitol Building. The tournament is sanctioned by the National Association for Scrabble in the Philippines (NASCAP).

Top seed Odette Carmina Rio of Iloilo live up to her pre-tournament billing, as she dominates the annual scrabble event. She topped the 42-player, 15-round rated tournament assuring her the title in the penultimate round after defeating defending champion Ronald Credo of Quezon City. In the final round, Antonio “TJ” de Jesus of Laguna surprised Rio to finish at second spot.

There was a four-way logjam for third place; however, Credo had the superior tiebreak to settle for third over Pasig City’s Hyatt Basman, Quezon City’s Louie Mark de Guzman and La Union’s Lorenzo Bacani.

With the continuous support of the Provincial Government of La Union, our local players have developed into stronger players at par with the best in the country.
