3rd La Union Scrabble Open 2007

(Report from Lorenzo Bacani, the Vice President of Metro La Union Scrabble Club (MLUSC) dated March 13, 2007)

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WINS 3RD LA UNION SCRABBLE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

After almost a near permanent postponement of the event because of some technicalities and despite the absence of 2005 La Union Scrabble Open Champion, Ronald Credo, and 2006 La Union Scrabble Open Champion, Odette Rio, the 2007 La Union Open Scrabble Championships was held with a resounding success with more than 30 rated and unrated players participated the event coming from Laguna, Manila, Bulacan, Baguio City and La Union.

Jessica Bacani, a 14 year old, second year high school student of Bauang, La Union surprised the field of veteran players and dominated the 3rd La Union Scrabble Open which was held March 10-11, 2007 at the Diego Silang Hall, Provincial Capitol, San Fernando City La Union. She posted a near perfect score in the first round of competition scoring 7.5 wins out of possible 9 wins and has unbelievably maintained her lead up to the second day of competition. She grabbed the lead from Atty/Col. Antonio Malonzo in the sixth round and never vacated the board 1 position until the end. Jessica is a member of the Philippine team who has competed in the World Youth Scrabble Championship in Sydney, Australia last December 2006.

Jessica posted 12 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses to dominate the event. Her two losses came from the hands of 2007 La Union Mayor's Cup champion Atty. Antonio Malonzo and the other loss came from Teejay de Jesus, the 1st runner-up of the 2006 La Union Open Scrabble Championships. Jessica faced Atty. Malonzo in the scrabble board six times with the former prevailing 4 times. Also, she defeated Teejay de Jesus three times in four games to capture the coveted champion's trophy and the allotted cash prize donated by the provincial government of La Union, headed by our Honorable Governor Victor F. Ortega.

2nd La Union Scrabble Open Governor’s Cup 2006 Report

(Report from Gerwin Carbonell, the President of Metro La Union Scrabble Club - MLUSC dated March 1, 2006)

In celebration with the 156th foundation anniversary of La Union, the Metro La Union Scrabble Club (MLUSC), in close cooperation with the Provincial Government of La Union, organized the 2nd La Union Scrabble Open: Governor’s Cup on February 25-26, 2006 at the Lobby of the Provincial Capitol Building. The tournament is sanctioned by the National Association for Scrabble in the Philippines (NASCAP).

Top seed Odette Carmina Rio of Iloilo live up to her pre-tournament billing, as she dominates the annual scrabble event. She topped the 42-player, 15-round rated tournament assuring her the title in the penultimate round after defeating defending champion Ronald Credo of Quezon City. In the final round, Antonio “TJ” de Jesus of Laguna surprised Rio to finish at second spot.

There was a four-way logjam for third place; however, Credo had the superior tiebreak to settle for third over Pasig City’s Hyatt Basman, Quezon City’s Louie Mark de Guzman and La Union’s Lorenzo Bacani.

With the continuous support of the Provincial Government of La Union, our local players have developed into stronger players at par with the best in the country.
