I've waited for 7 long years to duplicate my best ever finish - winning a national SCRABBLE tourney! I'm writing this story to share my views, dedication and passion of playing SCRABBLE -- win or lose!
Since I started playing SCRABBLE, I see to it that I record all my moves including words played and later analyze my games. Some games have somewhat puzzle-like situations particularly endgame which I am featuring here.
About 80 players showed up at SM City North
Edsa Entertainment Plaza last Friday (June 6, 2003) and were hoping to get one
of the three slots alloted to the Philippines to be able to qualify in the 2003
World Scrabble Championships to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia this coming
October 19-24, 2003.
I was paired against the defending
champion, Odette Rio in the first round. Our scores were almost even when Odette
played her first bingo, TUMEfIED for 80 pts to lead 190-107. Holding ELNSSTV, I
made use of the open E and played VENTLESS for 72 pts which was surprisingly
challenged by Odette and earned a 5 pt penalty for a score of 77 pts for that
turn. Later, Odette again surged ahead by playing her next bingo, ANlAGES for
67 pts for a 310-238 lead and I countered with VOITURES thru floating S for 65
pts and was again challenged by Odette to make it 70 pts (310-308). The word has two valid anagrams
(1?). Going to the homestretch, Odette emptied the bag by playing LAMBIER (H2a)
for 34 to lead 374-340 and we reached the following analytical endgame:
Odette's Rack: AIIOQTY Score : 374
Actual plays went this way:
Ronald :
GREY (L1a) - 39 pts -> 379
Odette :
QI (F2d) - 18 pts -> 392 (forgot to
block)
Ronald :
AITU (j9d) - 6 pts -> 385 + 16 = 401
and won.
Having analyzed the board position after my
GREY move, Odette could have won by playing LAITY (K11d) 10 pts -> 384
blocking AITU and threatens QI (J13d) for 28 pts. If I block with UT (J14a) 4
pts -> 383, then Odette would play QI (F1d) - 18 pts -> and wins. (Note:
Computer Simulation found this sequence of play after the inferior GREY move as
follows:
Maven2: UVA (M4a) 7 -> 386
Maven1: YO (J5d) 18 -> 406
Maven2: OI (F7a) 6 -> 392+6 (IIT)=398 still a win for Odette.)
I therefore conclude that my GREY move was a mistake. Can you find a winning play? (2?)
ROUND 2
I was comfortably ahead from the start up
to my 10th move when Joel Toroy from Cebu laid down TEARINg bingo on a tight
board to beat me 362-376.
ROUND 3
I won my third game 426-376 against Col.
Andy Aquino who played two bingos AGOnIES and ReNDERS. I had only one bingo,
ANTIENTS. What was the other anagram? (3?)
ROUND 4
This one was another endgame squeaker! Ursita Aparre also from Cebu leads 227-82 at one point of the game after playing two bingos DENAYING 80 pts and SAIREST 67 pts. I was able to somewhat nailed down the lead after playing SCReWED 78 pts for 284-227. Ursita later played NO (g15a) - 22 pts and emptied the bag to reach the following position:
Ursita's Rack : ?DLLNN Score : 365
Actual moves went this way:
Ursita: NED (M2d) - 7 pts -> 372
Ronald: PAC (C11d) - 18 pts -> 358 (Ronald may play CLAM (N12d) 24 pts -> 364 to block that TIBIAL spot but still loses to (4?).)
Ursita: No (F1d) - 9 pts -> 381
Ronald: LOP (M9d) - 19 pts -> 377 + 4 = 381 drawn.
Have you spotted a possible winning play of
Ursita (even after a QI (I7d) move to cut down the lead, 350-365)? (5?)
ROUND 5
I started the game with REAPERS (71 pts).
Later, Ric Marinas played DONZELS (83 pts) hooking D to HURDLE. I responded
with vACATION (70 pts) to lead 195-279. Ric managed to cut down the lead after
playing UTENSIL (68 pts) 285-310. But the turning point of the game was when I
made use of my blank to score ToRQUE for 47 pts (324-391) and hold on to my
lead to beat Ric 387-488.
ROUND 6
I won my last game against Eliezer Dayon
426-314 to finished with 4.5 wins for 9th place after day 1.
Day 2, Saturday, June 7, 2003
The King-of-the-Hill format with repeats was used in the 2nd day. So players on top boards were paired according to their ranking (Points & Spread). Player no. 1 vs player no. 2, player 3 vs player no. 4, etc.
This 2nd day marked my best performance as I amassed a 7-1 win-loss record for a total of 11.5-2.5 win-loss record on my way to the top board.
I earned my wins the hard way as 6 of my 8 games were fought and decided in the endgame. Here it goes:
ROUND 7
At board 5, I was again paired against Odette Rio. I drew first blood on my third move by playing TINDERS 69 pts but Odette replied with REGAINER 72 pts using the open R. Score: 93-104 in Odette's favor. Later, I held AGILNOT and played the 7-letter word (6?) for 72 pts, grabbed the upper hand 202-128. In the ensuing moves, Odette's maximizing plays using high point tiles which included ZILCH 78 pts narrowed down my lead 336-338. Going into the endgame, the score was tied at 364-364 after Odette's RIFS play. Board position looked like this:
Odette's rack : ?DEHINR score:364
It's my turn. Can you spot any winning
play? I have calculated one. Answer at the end of this section. (7?)
The game started as a closed board when
Tanjee Rabong seized the lead with his first bingo on his 9th turn, fOAMIER 67
pts, 246-272. Three turns later, he again unleashed another bingo, INVITERS 62
pts. There are two more anagrams (8?). I was trailing 317-350 going to this
board position.
Tanjee's rack : NNRRTU score:350
What is the key move to victory? (9?)
ROUND 9
On my 2nd turn, I was holding AELMRUY and
there was a floating T. I spotted the bingo (10?) to take an early lead, 53-87.
Maida Manaog played two natural bingos (NATIONS and RONDEAU) in the ensuing
play and grabbed the lead 240-204. She hang on to her lead and never looked
back. I lose, 442-376.
ROUND 10
My first bingo was REALISE to take a slight
lead, 96-111. Later, Mario Recedes held AEEGIIS and spotted a nice bingo with
the floating T (11?) to make it 271-271. The board was already tight but the
blanks were still out prior to my 11th turn. The score at that point was 335-339
in Mario's favor. My rack was ?CDINOU and played CONIa K1a 43 pts making
parallel words OFAY, NUR, IN and aG for a 335-382 lead. Mario tried to come
closer but I hang on to win. Final score: 384-400.
ROUND 11
Tanjee Rabong played PRoVIDE hooking E to the end of HUM making HUME*. I challenged off that word successfully. Current score at that time was 47-42 in my favor. Later, I played mONSTER 74 pts and Tanjee responded with EXTIRPs for a whopping 104 pts and seized the lead, 128-162. Using the open blank S, I countered with JUICEs J14a 60 pts on the DWS as J hit the TLS to return the lead in my favor, 188-162. I drew the other high point tiles to score and block at the same time, QAT 34 pts and ZINS for 42 pts to win this close game, 391-362.
ROUND 12
I held ?AEIMRU early in the game and played
my first bingo UREMIAs 67 pts to take the lead, 23-77. I was comfortably ahead
when I laid down my next bingo BLISTERS 74 pts for a 177-260 lead. Leo Capuno
held ILNORTU and played a bingo thru floating E (12?) to cut down my lead
245-260. Leo grabbed the lead after playing BOXED A15a 52 pts. for 293-288.
Later, Leo emptied the bag by playing EEK closing down one probable bingo lane
and we reached this board position.
Ronald's rack: ?EGIIOT score: 326
Leo's rack: ADNNQUV score: 351
I saw the possibility of Leo's chance to play
QUA (c1d) or QUAG (A2a), so I decided to block that opening. Actual moves went
this way:
Leo: DUNK (K10a) - 9 -> 360
Ronald: zITE (J11a) - 16 -> 352+32= 384 and won.
ROUND 13
My first turn was FAUGH (H4d) 32 pts. Bonnie Macala, our two-time national champion held ACELORT, played LOCATER (D9a) making the other word FAUGHT* and was challenged off successfully. Have you a spotted a missed bingo (13?)? On my 4th turn, I played FORAYS making the other word FAUGHS*. Bonnie did not challenged it. (Note: After the game, I consulted the ELM International Word List and discovered that it was a phoney word). He played his first bingo TRAiLED 69pts to trim down my lead, 110-81. I spotted WANDERER 74 pts thru floating D but Bonnie countered with OVATION 94 pts. to take the lead, 207-212. At this point, I drew EEQSTTT. I dumped the QT by playing QAT 12 pts keeping EESTT. Bonnie replied with DEI to block the triple lane opening. On my next turn, I laid down ROSETTE hooking E to HET 71 pts. I grabbed the lead anew, 290-257. Going to the homestretch, Bonnie fished one tile, played SI for 4 pts and left 4 tiles in the bag, with the current score of 364-320 in my favor and the board looked like this:
Unseen tiles: ABEGIIKNNPS
By looking at my tracking list, I can see the possibility of Bonnie's playing SKINNIER (A1d) 89 pts. So, I made some arithmetic calculation: 364-320= +44. (I lead by 44 points). So if I play my bingo now TWINkLE (M4d) 64pts, then, 44+64=108, and if Bonnie have SKINNIER, then the tiles left (ABGP): 9X2=18 would be subtracted from my score making 108-89-18= 1 then I can win by 1 pt!
On the other hand, if I chose TWINkLER
(A1d) 83 pts. So, 44+83=127. Bonnie's good rack combination would then be AGIKNNS
and could play TANKINGS (A1a) 104 pts! Catching me with (ABIP) worth 8x2=16
pts. So, 127-104-16= 7, still wins.
The actual moves were:
Ronald:
TWINkLE (M4d) - 64 pts -> 428 (and drew ABEP) in the bag.
Bonnie's
rack: GIIKNNS (He knows that SINKING (M4d) was blocked)
Bonnie:
KILNS (H12a) - 34 -> 354 (Hoping that I can't play out so he can play GIN
(A13d) 45 pts making the other word NOVATION).
Ronald:
PEBA (A11a) - 22 pts -> 450 + 8 = 458
Final
score was 458-354.
ROUND 14
At long last, I was at Board 1 paired against Maida Manaog whose on top at that moment. Maida's first turn was FOP (G8a) - 16 pts. My rack was ?EIILRT and immediately played sILTIER (J8d) - 68 pts, but Maida countered with NEGATED (B7a) -70 pts and took the lead, 86-68. Maida played her second bingo DOUBLINg thru floating L for a 162-122 lead. Later, I responded with VISAGES 77 pts to grab the upper hand, 194-213. From thereon, I managed to shut down open lanes and played cautiously to win this game. Final score: 344-425.
After 14 rounds, I'm on top with 11.5 wins!
DAY 3, Sunday, June 8, 2003
With 8 rounds to go, I am half a game ahead of my next pursuer. Since spread does not matter to me whatever the outcome of the game due to my previous draw, I was taking one game at a time.
On this 3rd and final day, they enforced a
spread cap with a maximum of + 150 pts spread. Meaning, if the actual score
reads 526-326, the recorded spread would be +150 for the winner and -150 for
the loser.
ROUND 15
Oscar Rivera, the only unbeaten player in
day 1 started the game with PEH (G5a) 16. ANIOORT was sitting in my rack, I
played ORATION (E9a) 72. On move 3, Oscar played UNSUITED (M5d) 61 thru
floating T to cut down my lead 85-126. Prior to his 11th turn, Oscar was ahead
282-274 then he played QaT (B2a) 38 forming another word TADVICE*. I was not
sure which of the two (TADVICE* or TADVANCE) was valid so I hold play while I
held this rack: AEIIRTZ. After 3 minutes, I decided to let go his play and use
the open S to bingo with SATIRIZE (O8d) 104 pts. and seized the lead, 320-378.
With the blank, S and -ING (and KEG) still out, I knew he can play an 8-letter
bingo from open C, H or E but he was in time trouble juggling his tiles until I
saw the flag down on his clock. He played HIKiNGS (H2a) 48 pts and was still
trailing 368-378. My pick up was AEELLMO and his remaining tiles was EG. I
played MEAL (F2d) 18 pts and he played out with GIE (C6a) 4 pts. 372-396.
Catching me with ELO 6pts less 10-pt time penalty, our final score was 368-396.
ROUND 16
A rematch with Maida at Board 1. I started
with OF (H8a) 10 pts with a good leave. Maida responded with JAK (F7a) 21. Next
turn, I played OESTRAL (J5d) 67 and Maida countered with STALLING (F11a) 68
using the floating L. Score: 77-89 in Maida's favor. Later, Maida played
ENCOrES (D6d) 66 and I replied with WINTLES (L2d) 78 to take the lead, 193-176.
Two moves later, Maida held EEHINRR and played a bingo thru floating C. I
challenged her word (14?) but ruled valid so her score for that turn was 97
pts. giving her the lead 230-310. From thereon, she maintained her composure
and beat me. Final score: 375-477.
ROUND 17
Going to this round, I'm half a game ahead
of Maida Manaog. She started with the rack: NOPRSTU and played UNSPORT*. I
challenged off the word successfully. I held AIKMNTX. I saw MIXT, MINX, MATIN
but I chose MAX (G8a) 24 pts. Maida replied with UPON (G7a) 27 pts. [She missed
the bingo (15?)]. I drew first blood by playing NERvATE (B10a) 66 pts and she
replied with FLOUTERS (C5d) 68 pts thru floating E to cut down my lead,
115-121. Later, Maida played VIVO (L1a) 30 pts. to take the lead, 309-276. My
10th rack was ?ADNRST and used the open O of VIVO on the top board to play this
bingo (16?). That was the turning point as I nailed down this game, 382-458.
ROUND 18
Now, I'm 1.5 win ahead among other pursuers. I was again paired against Maida by virtue of her big spread. I started the game with BIGOT (H5d) 16 pts making sure that vowel was not next to DLS. Maida used her turn in exchanging 5 tiles. My next play was CUPID (I2d) 18 pts. to lead, 34-0. On her 4th turn, Maida laid down TENEBRA* (E1d) 70 pts. I knew TENEBRAE was okay so I dismissed that TENEBRA* was a singular term so I didn't bother to challenge it, she leads 89-99. I replied with THRU (E1a) 21 pts to close the nine timer lane and balance my rack at the same time, I led 110-99. Maida got the blank and played STHeNIC (D7d) 77 pts on her next turn, 110-176. At this point, my rack was AIIRSTV. A loose A would give me AVIARIST. O would give me OVARITIS. No such luck! I tried TRIVIAS* (I9d) 69. Maida said, "hold''! She was holding EFIOORT at that moment. She's got FOOTIER but won't fit. The board looked like this:
Ronald's score: 179 or 110?
After 3 minutes of hold play, Maida accepted my play and laid down ROOFIEST (C15a) 86 for her 3rd consecutive bingo. She leads 179-262. (Did she made the right decision? I want to hear your views whether or not you'll challenged it). TRIVIA is a plural of TRIVIUM, so TRIVIAS* is no good but Maida had the reason for not challenging it.
I drew ADEIITV. Based on my tracking list, all power tiles, 2-S and blank were still out so there was still chance for me to catch up. I played VIVA (I12a) 20 pts keeping my T for VIVAT later. She played MAW (D2d) miscounted at 34 pts. (should be 32 pts). Current score: 199-296 in Maida's favor.
OUN came in, so my rack now is DEINOTU. No bingo! I opened up again by playing FOU (K3a) 17 pts. leaving DEINT. She replied with QADI (N1d) 36 pts forming the other word FOUD. 216-332.
At last, I saw daylight by drawing EN. DEEINNT for DENTINE (O4d) miscounted it for 75 pts (should be 85 pts, I discovered this error when I analyzed this game at home) to cut down her lead, 291-332. Maida partially blocked that obvious opening by playing ALEE (N7d) 16 pts. Score: 291-348
My new rack looked like this: ADENORZ. I needed another opening, otherwise, Maida would blocked the open A of VIVA next turn, so I scored and opened another bingo lane by playing DOZE (C3d) 42 pts, cutting down her lead, 333-348. Maida played JEAT (A1a) 33 pts partially blocking my last opening but exposing J and E. Score: 333-381.
My pick up was LSSX. Going to the endgame, the board looked like this:
Unseen
tiles: ?EEKNOORY
Maida's score: 381
By examining the board position, I analyzed that E and J of JEAT were the only opening on the left wing for a possible bingo. While A of VIVA and L-column were also the opening at the right wing. I need to get rid of X and one consonant. With 2 tiles left, I'll gamble to dump 2 tiles. X and N in the hope of drawing EN so I could play REALNESS (B7d). I knew that there was a possibility of Maida can play a bingo like ENJOYERs based on unseen tiles. But this was my last hurrah, so I decided to play NIX (H11a) 19 for 352-381, emptying the bag and picked up ?E. So, her rack reads EKNOORY as I gazed at my tracking list. Without too much further ado, Maida played RECOOK (B13a) 34 pts, 352-415 leaving NY.
I said, ''hold''! In time trouble (2
minutes left), I held ?AELRSS. The E of JEAT was already blocked, I shifted my
thoughts at L and M-columns. I concentrated my thoughts on the open A. I told
myself, all I need is a bingo to win. With my time ticking away, about less
than a minute, I juggled my rack until I found the bingo (17?) just in the nick
of time! I played the lowest bingo move. I'm sure, there were better plays, but
I'll cherish this dramatic win!
ROUND 19
The winner at Board 2, Leo Capuno was my next opponent. I was 1.5 win ahead of him.
I started with the rack ??AAASZ and played SAZ (H7d) 24 pts. (I spent 4 minutes on my clock but can't find any bingo). What words (18?) did I miss? Leo unleashed his first natural bingo REEDITS (M3d) 83 pts on his 2nd turn to take an early lead, 109-37. I managed to bingo my 2 blanks on my 4th move playing LOANwoRD (E12a) thru floating D recalling my mnemonic RONALD + OW. :-) Leo challenged my play but was ruled valid for 63 pts. I led, 128-121. After a series of plays, Leo played his next bingo, RENTALS (C4a) - 73 pts and I responded with REAPING (C9d) - 75 pts making use of LA-ALA hook, cutting down Leo's lead, 253-262.
Going to the endgame, the board looked like this:
Leo's
rack : EEIIINS
Score:
347
Ronald's
rack: DINOTUY
Score: 355
Leo played IN (O1d) 17 pts. leaving EEIIS and took a slight lead, 355-364. Then, I laid down the winning move. (19?)
ROUND 20
Mario Recedes won at Board 2, so we have a rematch. I was 1.5 win ahead of him going to the last 3 rounds, so a victory would assure me of the Championship.
Mario played his first bingo on his 3rd
move, REUNITE for 64 pts. I replied with a 4-timer using the floating I and
played EViCTING for 102 pts. I took the lead, 85-112. On his next two turns,
Mario maximized his score with ZITE 50 pts and HEREBY 54 pts on the triple lane
placing Y in the DWS. Later, my rack was AIMSOUW, I was confused of the correct
spelling, and played a bingo, MIAOUWS*. Mario challenged it off successfully
and I lose my turn. Mario pulled away with his next bingo, RIVULETS for 76 pts.
and never looked back. I lose, 449-347.
ROUND 21
Before the start of this round, I could feel the pressure now. I told myself, I need to be careful now. I was half a game ahead of Mario Recedes.
Mario's initial play was CHIME (D8a) - 30 pts. I held AEFNOPW. I saw HOWF (E8a) 26 pts with a good AENP leave, COWPEA (D8d) 26 pts for tile turnover, but I chose PAWN (F7a) 25 pts. Score: 30-25. (Note: Maven's best play is a 4-timer WANHOPE (E5d) for 60 pts.)
Mario played AIA (H6a) - 13 pts. I drew DSTT making my rack DEFOSTT. I played DEFT (J5a) 19 pts only to realized that DEFT (I5a) scored better after pressing my clock. Score: 43-44
Mario's parallel play of OBIA (J4a) 32 pts put him in the lead. I picked up CENQ and immediately played QAT (M3d) 24 pts. Score: 75-68
Mario played MU (E9a) 15pts. My rack was ACENOST. I hurriedly put down my bingo, OCTANES (D3a) 66 pts. Score: 91-134
Mario had two choices of play: JINN (H1d) 36 pts or DJIN (A4a) 32 pts. because I saw him shifting his tiles, but he opted for the latter. I held AELORST. I was about to play LOCATERS (D6d) 75 pts. but Mario gave me a D opening. I immediately saw DELATORS (A4d) but the S would be exposed, so I juggled again, LEOTARDS won't fit. I settled for the defensive LODESTAR (A2d) 77 + 5 pt penalty due to unsuccessful challenge by Mario making the current score of 123-217.
At this point, I started to shut off
important openings until Mario played sTILLED. Later I countered with RaISINS
and took the remaining tiles in the bag. Mario played ANERGIES making use of
the floating S but not enough to win. I won this game and the Championship,
349-364.
ROUND 22 (last round)
Leo Capuno looked tense at this point as I stared at him. We met twice already prior to this game and I won both games. We drew one tile each to determine who would start.
My first rack: CDDEOTW. I played COWED (H4d) 28 pts. Leo responded with MIG (I7d) 21 pts. Score: 28-21.
My next rack: DGHLPRT. Instead of exchanging tiles, I played HEMP (G7a) 15 pts. Leo scored with JOW (F6a) 34 pts. Score: 43-55.
I drew LN making my rack DGLLNRT. I traded 5 tiles leaving NG. Leo exchanged 2 tiles.
I picked up EKNOT so my rack then was EGKNNOT. I played GONK (I10a) 19 pts making the other word MIGG. Leo replied with VINIC (D4a) 20 pts. Score: 62-75.
My next rack: BENORST. There are plenty of choices (20?) but I chose the risky one, BRETONS (K1d) 80 pts. Leo scored with AXE (L4d) 35. Score: 142-110.
I drew IIINORQ and played QI (M3d) 25 pts. Leo played MEAN (J11a) 26 pts. Score: 167-136.
TY came in to make it IINORTY. I was about to play BRINY (K1a) 33 pts but YONI (L12) 37 scored better but would open another nine timer. I chose the latter. I led, 205-136. Little did I know, Leo was already holding ?EEISTW. He was juggling his rack and after a 4 minute thought, played a nine timer! (21?)
From thereon, Leo maintained his lead . I was able to play late bingo DORTERs but Leo hang on to win this game for his 2nd place finish. Final score: 401-495.
Ronald's Score: 205
Can you
find the nine timer played by Leo?
ANSWERS:
(1) VITREOUS and VIRTUOSE
(2)
Solution No. 1
Ronald should have played ETUI (J10d) - 6
pts -> 346. If Odette would play QI L1d 21 pts -> 395 to block Ronald's
obvious play of GRAY (K1a)- 39 pts, then Ronald can play out with RAGGY (B2a) -
36 pts -> 382 + 18 = 400 and wins.
Solution No. 2 (Computer Simulation)
Maven played GRAY first (K1a)- 39 pts -> 379 and threatens ETUI (J10d), ADIEU (G15a) or UTERI (K9a) next turn. Odette's best reply would be TIVY (L4a) 28 -> 408. Maven to go out with UTERI (K9a) 6 -> 385+26 (AIOQ) = 411 and wins
(3) STANNITE. Not TANNIEST*
(4) Maven spotted NOLLs (A11a) 10 pts - > 372+10=382 to win
(5) If
Ronald would play QI (I7d) 21 -> 350, he would still lose against NOLLs
(A11a) 10 -> 375. Ronald's best reply would be CALP (A13a) 21 -> 371 and
Ursita would play out with INSIDE (K3d) 9 -> 384+8= 392 and wins by 21 pts.
(Note: Computer Simulation sequence of
moves are as follows:
Maven2: DI (I7d) 5 -> 370
Maven1: QI (K2d) 11 -> 359
Maven2: uNSCReWED (B14a) 30 -> 400
Maven1: YAPP (K11a) 11 -> 370+2= 372 and still a win for Ursita)
(6) ANTILOG
(7)
