QC engineer is tops in Cebu Scrabble tilt
A 26-year-old engineer from Quezon City was recently crowned the country's best in the fledgling game of scrabble in Cebu.
Ronald Credo won 12 of 13 games to top the 1996 National Scrabble Championship organized by the Cebu Scrabble Association Inc. (CSAI) and held at the SM City in Cebu. Credo topped a field of 70 players.
In only his third year of active competition, Credo swept his first six games and had the title locked up as early as the 11th round when he continued his streak while his closest pursuers each had at least three losses. He finished ninth last year.
Credo won P10,000 and a giant trophy from the sponsor, Mabuhay Educational Center Inc., exclusive Philippine licensee of the Scrabble Crossword Game brand granted by JW Spears and Sons.
Credo led a sweep of the top five places by Luzon entries. Unilab's Oscar Rivera, the only player to beat Credo in the tournament, took second place with a 10-3 mark.
Irland Bonzon, playing out of the Los Banos Club, took third with 9-4 slate, beating six others who finished with the same tally on the strength of a superior spread (total winning margins). Rounding out the top five were defending champion Armando "Bing" Lao and UPLB's Mario Miranda.
Mindanao's Solaiman Pakinson was the highest placed non-Luzon entrant at sixth, followed by Bicol's Rolly Mandapat, Jun Danganan and top Cebuano bet Joel Toroy at ninth spot. Manila's Romy Almazan had the best spread among those who finished at 8-5 and was tenth overall.
Highlighting the meet was the setting of two national records, with Mindanao's Jabber Barabadan scoring 374 points in a single turn with the word QUETZALS, eclipsing Reli German's record of 196 points set last year.
The other record was for the highest single-game score set by sportscaster Butch Maniego, who tallied 613 points in the final round, the first time a Filipino Scrabble player scored more than 600 in a tournament.
