🏆 Round 7 Spotlight: Squeezing World Champion Panupol Sujjayakorn in a Breathtaking Late-Game Comeback
Meeting and playing against 2003 World Scrabble Champion Panupol Sujjayakorn of Thailand. This game marks our fourth encounter; we previously crossed paths three times at the 2002 King’s Cup in Bangkok, leaving me with a 1-2 record against him going into this match.
True competitive greatness is measured by how fiercely you fight back when a giant throws down a premium offensive avalanche. In Round 7 of the 2006 Causeway Challenge, I stood board-to-board against one of the most feared names in international Scrabble history: Thailand's Panupol Sujjayakorn.
The match erupted into high-scoring chaos early on. Panupol hammered the board on his second turn with a massive 102-point blockbuster four-timer bingo, WOND(E)RED. He followed that up on Turn 8 with a beautiful, highly plausible 9-letter extension bingo: REME(DI)ALS. Knowing his reputation as an elite world icon with an endless lexicon in his head, I uncharacteristically gave him the benefit of the doubt and let it stand unchallenged.
Trailing by a massive margin deep in the second half, I went on a ferocious, hyper-aggressive counter-offensive. Weaponizing a blank tile on Turn 17, I exploded with SUETIEr at N1 for 73 points, and immediately backed it up on the very next turn with a spectacular 72-point vertical bingo of RAINILY at J9!
The room went dead silent as the scores plummeted to an agonizingly close 378-377 margin. I was right on his heels, ready for the definitive knockout blow. Unfortunately, the final tile pool completely refused to cooperate. Despite holding a second blank tile on a volatile ?AETUVW rack down the stretch, the clogged layout completely choked out any winning bingo lines. Forced to dump tiles via V(I)EWy (28), Panupol safely navigated the final frames to squeeze out a 442-405 victory. Coming that close to toppling a world champion remains one of the most adrenaline-fueled memories of my 2006 campaign.
