In Round 3 of the 2006 Causeway Challenge, I stood face-to-face with Malaysia's youngest-ever top qualifier and international superstar, Ganesh Asirvatham. What followed was an absolute offensive clinic that forced me to play maximum-efficiency Scrabble simply to stay alive.

The board erupted into a blistering track race early on. Ganesh unleashed an unbelievable, merciless onslaught, dropping four consecutive bingos in the first half of the match! He systematically bombarded the lanes with SP(A)MMIER (71), ISOLEAD. (63), a massive blank-assisted TI(L)ElIKE at E4 for 94 points, and VENT(A)GES for 66 points. Buried under a rapid, overwhelming deficit, I refused to fold. I balanced my tiles and struck right back on Turn 9, detonating a beautiful blank-free bingo of my own: CHAT(T)ING at 4A for a roaring 88 points!

The real psychological kicker was discovered long after the final tiles cleared. On Turn 22, Ganesh sneakily parallel-shingled IRIS across four separate words to complete an un-challenged phoney bingo: CHATTINGS*! It was a completely plausible word at the table, and he successfully got away with it.

The tile gods continued to tease me down the stretch. Holding an awkward AEFLNTX rack, I realized that if that pesky X had only been a blank tile, I could have slammed down a massive counter-bingo of INFLATEd to permanently erase his lead. Even if the X had simply been left behind in the bag, the remaining tile equity would have been enough to steal the win! Instead, I had to maximize the heavy consonant for a short-word score of TAX(I) for 39 points. Even though Ganesh's illegal CHATTINGS* and lucky draws ultimately carried him to a 492-438 victory, putting up 438 points against a four-bingo blitz from one of the greatest players in Asian Scrabble history is an achievement I look back on with immense pride.
